9/11 Jamboree

Today is September 11, 2020.  Nineteen years ago our world changed forever after the tragedies at the World Trade Center, the Pentagon, and in Pennsylvania.  The town of Wethersfield, although over 100 miles from New York City was deeply impacted as three men - David Winton, Richard Keane, and Jeffrey Bittner lost their lives.

These three men shared a passion for living life to the fullest, loved spending time with their families, and played and coached numerous sports.  In a tribute to David, Richard, and Jeffrey the Wethersfield Soccer Community (which includes the WHS girls & boys teams as well as the George D. Ritchie Youth League) has sponsored a soccer jamboree each year since 2002.  The jamboree has given people the opportunity to remember & honor those lost on 9/11, reconnect with old friends, and enjoy the game of soccer.
The COVID-19 pandemic has caused the cancelation of this year's jamboree, however the purpose of the event can not be forgotten.

Sarah Winton Coffey, sister of David Winton and school counselor at WHS speaks on David's behalf each year.  She has noted how kind David was and would always put others ahead of himself.  Sarah reminds us that when reflecting on 9/11 to think about the importance and impact of treating people with respect and helping those in need.  PLease listen to Sarah's message here -

Judy Keane, beloved wife of Richard, started and is the president of the Keane Foundation in town.  She was instrumental in the creation of the 9/11 Memorial Sports Center at the Community Center and provides funding and opportunities for youth programming in town.  Judy's work has afforded countless opportunities for kids of all ages in Wethersfield and is in constant collaboration with the Wethersfield Parks & Recreation and the Wethersfield Public Schools.

Please keep the families of David Winton, Richard Keane, Jeffrey Bittner, and all of those who suffered a loss on that horrific day, 19 years ago, in your thoughts and prayers.  We hope you can join us next year, in the Fall of 2021, which will mark the 20th anniversary of our Memorial Soccer Jamboree.  In addition if you would like to donate to the Winton Scholarship Fund you can visit their facebook page at  Also, if you would like to donate to, or find more information about the Keane Foundation, please visit their website at
